South African Library Week 2024 – Library and Information Association of South Africa Celebrates with the Theme “Libraries Foster Social Cohesion”
The Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) is gearing up to celebrate South African Library Week 2024 with the theme “Libraries Foster Social Cohesion”. This annual event, scheduled to take place from the 18th to the 24th of March 2024, aims to highlight the critical role that libraries play in uniting communities and promoting social integration.
The theme “Libraries Foster Social Cohesion” emphasizes the importance of libraries as hubs where individuals from diverse backgrounds can come together to exchange ideas, engage in cultural activities, and access information and resources. By providing a space for dialogue, learning, and connection, libraries contribute to building a sense of shared purpose and identity among community members.
According to the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, social cohesion is defined as “the degree of social integration and inclusion in communities and society at large, and the extent to which mutual solidarity finds expression among individuals and communities.” Libraries, as community institutions, play a pivotal role in achieving social cohesion by fostering inclusivity and providing a safe environment for all individuals.
Inclusivity is a core value of libraries, where everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate. By tailoring their services to meet the needs of the community, libraries promote lifelong learning, support literacy development, and facilitate informed community engagement. Through educational programs, libraries also promote understanding of diverse cultures, histories, and traditions, fostering tolerance and enhancing social cohesion.
Additionally, libraries contribute to social cohesion by supporting initiatives that align with the Sustainable Development Goals, such as Quality Education and Sustainable Cities and Communities. By providing access to information, technology, and resources, libraries help address socio-economic disparities, promote environmental awareness, and bridge the digital divide in society.
The launch of South African Library Week 2024 will take place on Friday, the 15th of March 2024, at the South African Library for the Blind in Makhanda, Eastern Cape. The event would not be possible without the generous support of sponsors, including the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and Sabinet.
