SASSA Grants Payment Dates for March 2025 Confirmed Amid Card Switch Deadline

Pretoria, South Africa – March 1, 2025
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has officially released the payment schedule for social grants in March 2025, providing much-needed clarity for millions of beneficiaries relying on these funds. As the agency supports over 27 million South Africans—including the elderly, disabled, children, and unemployed—the timely announcement of SASSA grants payment dates ensures recipients can plan their finances effectively. With the added pressure of a looming deadline to switch from SASSA Gold Cards to Postbank Black Cards, this month’s disbursements are under the spotlight.

For March, the payment rollout begins early in the month, adhering to SASSA’s standard practice of staggering dates by grant type. Older Persons’ Grants, including those for pensioners aged 60 and above, will be paid starting Tuesday, March 4. This includes linked grants like the War Veterans Grant, currently set at R2,210 monthly. Disability Grants, providing R2,190 to eligible recipients, follow on Wednesday, March 5, covering those unable to work due to permanent impairments. Children’s Grants, such as Child Support (R510) and Foster Child (R1,120) payments, will be disbursed from Thursday, March 6, supporting caregivers nationwide.

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, now valued at R370 after a 2024 increase, operates on a separate timeline. Payments for approved SRD beneficiaries—unemployed individuals aged 18 to 60 with no other income—are scheduled between March 25 and March 31. SASSA advises these recipients to check their status on the official SRD website (srd.sassa.gov.za) for exact dates, as individual payouts vary. “Once the funds are in your account, there’s no rush to withdraw—they’ll stay there until you need them,” said SASSA spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi, aiming to ease congestion at pay points.

This month’s payments coincide with a critical transition period. SASSA and Postbank have set February 28, 2025, as the deadline for beneficiaries to replace their expiring Gold Cards with new Postbank Black Cards. After this date, Gold Cards will cease to function, regardless of their printed expiry dates. The switch, intended to enhance security and streamline transactions, has sparked concern among recipients, with some reporting difficulties accessing replacement cards at retailers like Shoprite, Checkers, Boxer, and Pick n Pay. Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe has acknowledged the March deadline may be insufficient, hinting at potential extensions as MPs push for more time.

Posts on X reflect a mix of relief and frustration. One user wrote, “Finally, March dates are out—now I can budget,” while another warned, “Get your Black Card sorted, or you’re stuck come payday!” SASSA assures beneficiaries that payments will proceed uninterrupted for those using bank accounts or who’ve completed the card switch. However, the agency cautions against scams, urging recipients to verify officials’ credentials and safeguard their IDs and PINs.
With poverty affecting over 55% of South Africans and unemployment at 32.9% (per World Bank estimates), these grants remain a lifeline. The March schedule offers stability amid economic challenges, but the card transition adds urgency. Beneficiaries are encouraged to act swiftly—whether collecting funds via ATMs, retailers, or the Post Office—to ensure seamless access to their support. As one X user put it, “SASSA keeps us going, but they sure keep us on our toes too.” For updates, recipients can call the SASSA hotline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit local offices.
